MANELY LOVE MONDAY JUNE 5, 2017

Volume 108: Wonder Women

So, I saw Wonder Woman last week and what a wonder it was. I knew it was going to be good but I didn’t expect to feel so full once it was over. I made sure to watch the film in receiving mode: taking in the rhetoric, mannerisms, resolve, and the power that the Amazons displayed day to day. I was completely in awe as I watched because it was everything I needed to see, at the precise moment that I needed to see it. Wonder Woman ran straight toward the action, approached it head on, believing that she would come out on top. I watched with greedy eyes.

See, I’m working to make a pretty intense transition to hair styling, full time; believing in myself as a supreme being made from God and by God able to manifest my desires, much like the Amazons, is crucial. Sometimes we lose sight on just how tall we should walk but never forget your power. My power lies in my hands, literally. Where is your power located? Take a moment to look within and recognize your ability to grab life by the horns and look great while at it. Whatever your ‘it’ is, pursue and conquer head on while you slay. I personally would not have it any other way and I am also here to assist. Wonder Woman’s hair was on point in every scene whether in conversation or in battle – the blow out remained strong.

MANELY LOVE MONDAY! MAY 1, 2017

Volume 107: Life/Adorn

❤ All this life in me (cc: Frank Ocean). In this present moment possibilities are endless. I imagine myself tying my shoes at the ‘Start’ line, gun in the air – GO!, and then I take off. The worker-bee mentality that I possessed in school must now be utilized without the presence of walls and a set schedule provided. I’m my own boss: building a regime for myself, accountability at the helm.

❤ So, with that as the foundation – Let’s Do This!

❤ Hey! I hope that I have found you well. Spring is upon us ladies and gentlemen, the season for color and adornment. Flowers, good energy, fun color-ways, good energy, up-styling, haircuts, henna, blow-outs, extensions and oh, good energy. Prom season is upon us so in your planning remember, that I got you! Add some length or wear your hair up, you have options that’ll suit your prom look perfectly. Tell a friend to tell a friend the good news 🙂 . I’m like wishing that henna was accessible to me back when I went to prom but now it’s in abundance – get you some! This same sentiment goes for wedding season — on a much grander scale. I get chills thinking about “Big Days”. ❤ Thee day of love, something I am all about. With that, your hair DESERVES good, quality care, attention, and energy. That plus henna – simple or intricate to put the cherry on top. Simply stated, ‘It’s a slay’.

If you’re in the mood for a blowout, cut service, longer tresses, henna, etc. (services offered can be found here), book with me! A queen is at your service. I can be reached through all my social spaces and via email: sarah_taylor_d@yahoo.com. My availability can be found here

MANELY LOVE MONDAY! APRIL 3, 2017

Volume 106: & Just Like That…

❤ I did it. You did it. We did it. Year and a half in our rear-view. We made it to the other side with something tangible in our back pockets. Regardless of how spent and tired you might feel, you cannot deny that this is huge. And with one huge goal crossed off your list, you deserve to press pause on the grind, celebrate, and rest before you start the next big adventure! As mentioned before, it is important to acknowledge the hard work you have put in. By doing so, the next level will feel much more welcomed into your life and you will have a rosy outlook from jump-street.

❤ In my case, no school means more time, more availability, and more freedom to tackle next steps. The mandatory weekend appointment is no more. Beginning next week (April 9, 2017), availability shifts to 6:30-8:30pm Monday through Friday and 9a-5p Saturday. It is time to apply what I’ve learned and acquired during my time at Paul Mitchell the School Chicago. Once you know better, you do better. The beauty of all of this is that I did it all, for you. The client. Without clientele, I’m just a Sarah with scissors in my left hand so fall in and I’ll catch you. 🙂 — Haircuts, Extensions (5 methods ), Texture Styling, and Henna — Let’s Do It!

MARCH 6, 2017

Volume 105: A 5-Week Pixie

❤ Y’all…………….I only have five weeks left. Not a year, not half a year, not five months but one, two, three, four, five weeks until I finish my Paul Mitchell the School program. Honestly, I don’t think that notion has yet to hit me completely. I’ll randomly look at the date and just think, “Whoa…Sarah, its March…2017”. This also puts me in this weird in between where on one hand, I’m SO close to being able to put this experience behind me but on the other hand, close or not, I’m still managing 15-hour days until the very last. They say, it’s darkest just before dawn so right now it’s most important to keep my eyes on the finish line and just do it, like Nike says.

❤ A few months ago, I asked – what would five months mark the end of for you? I know I’m not alone in this dream chasing ting so anyone reading, who’s also weeks away from completing a goal – keep swimming because you’re almost there. As dreams go – after one goal is accomplished so starts a fresh page, a new level to conquer. My, my I have work to do: acquire my license, client building, networking, money saving, travel with it…but for now – let’s focus on putting on those finishing touches and celebrating! Yes, celebrate. Do not begin the next level without first acknowledging the work put in toward the current. More times than not were just working, working, working, working without stopping to live and celebrate the milestones. Not me. I’ve mentioned how hard this past year and a half was for me: a demanding…exhausting yet wonderfully life-changing experience. So, catch me with a drink or few come first week of April.

Sarah ‘Susie’ Taylor Baby

❤ Speaking of change, I cut my hair! (some more). The braids served a purpose but I wanted to be Sarah ‘Susie’ Taylor (my short hair alter-ego), once again. I love it so much. Shout out to my school mate, Angel, who told me when we first started school that by the time I graduated, I’d have a pixie cut. She obviously saw a sassiness in me that I hadn’t yet saw in myself (😋). With my new cut, (thank you Jailyn), went more of my relaxed hair and I’m finally just under 100% natural with maybe a bit of relaxed hair in the longer bang area. I’m already seeing how quickly my hair reverts at the smallest hint of moisture but that leaves me two options: be comfortable with my texture or get a relaxer. I’m building comfort as my hair hasn’t been this soft and strong, in years. Plus, once I decide to color her, relaxed hair won’t be an issue.

❤ That’s all I have for now. Next time we talk, it’ll be just one more week…but until then, ‘Just Keep Swimming’.

If you’re in the mood for a blowout, new color or cut service book with me Wednesday through Friday at Paul Mitchell (P: 312 548 7588, Request desired hair service with Sarah D., #64). If you are in the mood for longer tresses, a longer or private service in general, book with me personally for a weekend appointment. Either way, I got you. A queen is at your service.

MANELY LOVE MONDAY! FEBRUARY 6, 2017

Volume 104: Our Hair…An Experience

My sister, Simone, asked me to offer some insight on the ‘black hair experience’ for her agency’s Black History Month focus (shout out to DigitasLbi). I happily obliged because, duh — hair is life. With that said, let’s get right to it.

The Black Hair Experience is thee Experience (yes, I’m bias). Reaching back to the time of Queen Madame C.J. Walker – the black hair evolution has been insanely magical. Black hair is dimensional in nature – long, short, coarse, curly, naturally straight, big like Diana Ross, shaved like Grace Jones….black woman can do it all and the base foundation of black hair versatility is natural hair.

Natural Hair

  • Hair whose texture hasn’t been altered by chemical straighteners.
  • Typically recognized as a ‘fro’ but the possibility of natural hair is endless
Queendom is...

Queendom is…

Your natural hair is the launch pad of innovation – the starting point of taking your coils from point A to point B. Solange said it best: “They don’t understand what it means to me. Where we chose to go. Where we’ve been to know” (Don’t Touch My Hair). Any woman’s hair is her crown…a black woman’s hair is her crown and identity. It states that, ‘I am a black woman and the coils that grow from my head are laced with life’. Anything in life requires patience – same goes for your hair. The following tips have helped me along the way…:

  • Product and more product. Every head has its own set of rules and regulations – its own product cocktail as well. You’re going to kiss a number of frogs before you find the set of products meant for your desired needs – be patient.
  • The versatility can be endless. You don’t always have to wear it curly and you don’t always have to wear it straight. That’s the beauty of it all. Color, cut, and manipulate your crown to match your mood.
  • Maintenance is key. Regular haircuts are crucial to hair health even with natural hair. Length without maintenance is useless. Grow your hair with a purpose.
  • Go protective. If you are thinking about transitioning or maybe just want to give your hair a break, protective styling allows you to give those strands a break and tap into more queendom: long braids, extensions, crochet styles, etc. Have some fun.
  • Good Vibes. The energy you cultivate registers in every cell in your body, remember that. Commit to good energy with zero tolerance for negative energy – your mind, body, soul, AND HAIR will thank you.
  • If you use heat, you must also use thermal protection. Heat will eventually wear down the strongest strands. Moderation is key.

Most important: whatever you do to YOUR HAIR, is your choice. Make styling decisions with pride.

My personal relaxed to natural journey:

Living with natural hair for a little over a year now, there is a visible difference in the strength of my hair. I do not at all mean that to say, you can’t be relaxed and healthy. However, if you’ve been relaxing your hair for 10 years or more…you can’t help but see a difference immediately and wonder why you hadn’t transitioned sooner. To each his or her own, remember that.  Much to my delight, my natural curls straighten easily and my blowouts are full of silk. See, that’s my point: I am natural but I wear my hair straight, period. It matches my mood and overall aesthetic. But peaks and valleys are ever-present. I wear my hair short AND natural – you can only imagine how high-maintenance this becomes when humidity is present. During those times, it is still important that I commit to moderate heat with upkeep. Short, sassy, and natural. I’m in love with my hair.

Last ting, Black History is 365 but for the sake of the calendar — love, peace, and joy to all my black queens and kings of the past, present, and future.

MANELY LOVE MONDAY! JANUARY 1, 2017

Volume 103: GVO 2k17

Yo! Turn to ya neighbor and tell em,”We made it”. Take a silent moment to reflect on what you’ve been through this past year: the good, bad, and down-right fugayzee (Chicago ❤ ). Now follow up that moment with a smile because guess what, it’s 2017. The past is just that so best to leave it there and move forward. Always move forward. I feel a shared sentiment that 2017 is to usher in both change & continued prosperity. Some chapters closing, some continuing, and some only beginning but a firm belief that it’s basically, lit. 😛 . I don’t know about yous but I am surely excited to see what this fresh 365 has to offer the gyal. I am soon to close a very important chapter called: School & My License. I can’t begin to describe how amazing it feels to finally be just 3 months away from more time, flexibility, mental space and more hair! My time to be a full time hair stylist is upon me and a queen is most definitely at your service. Shake off the troubles of yesteryear and commit to control – we will happen to 2017 and not the other way around (cc: 2016). So here’s to fresh time, fresh challenges, fresh blessings, fresh opportunities, and a fresh outlook. We got this.

I had a number of beautiful canvases to work on this past holiday season – take a look.

All this love...

All this love into 2017…

MANELY LOVE MONDAY! DECEMBER 5, 2016

Volume 102: E.O.Y.

Yall! I know that any day above ground is a blessing but when I say that 2016 has been a bit heavy for the gyal, believe me. I feel this sentiment has been shared by a number of my peers and good news good people: We can only go up/glo up from here. Fresh Time is around the corner…wow, just like that. Lately, time has been an interesting phenomenon for me. Time, literally, waits for no man or no queen. :). January is coming. February is coming. March is coming. The only question is, what will you have accomplished when it does? “Sun burn in my eyes, I been looking up” and forward as my goal of receiving my license and formal training comes to fruition. Jah Bless. Soon, I will be able to move forward as a full time hair stylist and dance with time more loosely. Jah Bless. So, that’s what I wanted to share today. December is here to usher in a new season. Just Keep Swimming like Dory said. You got this.

No Heat Boys

No Heat Boys

Last ting: No Heat December, more of the same. My twin, Moni, has joined me in my quest. Good luck telling us apart. 😛 .
